Recognition continues for cinematographers and NZCS members Maria Inés Manchego NZCS and Bayley Broome-Peak, whose respective films have enjoyed an impressive festival run this year.

Both Big Girls Don’t Cry, shot by Maria Inés and Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant, shot by Bayley, premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January, before captivating audiences at the recently wrapped New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) 

Directed by Paloma Schneideman, Big Girls Don’t Cry follows a teenage girl’s coming-of-age story in small-town New Zealand. Set during the summer of 2006, the film has received widespread acclaim and was a finalist for the World Cinema Dramatic Award at Sundance 2026.

Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant is a homegrown sci-fi comedy following a messy, underachieving millennial who must navigate an accidental alien pregnancy, sceptical medical experts, and an oversharing mother. Directed by creative duo Thunderlips (Jordan Dodson and Sean Wallace), the film thrilled late night audience members when it screened as part of Sundance’s Midnight section.
