The NZCS has run a very successful Gender Diversity intern program since 2019, with support from the NZFC Talent Development /Strategic Development fund and cooperating producers. This year, 2024, we have launched a pilot program with assistance from the NZ Film Commission, Strategic Development Fund to address the under-representation of other minority groups, irrespective of gender.
Based on NZFC guidelines, this will primarily address Māori, Pacific peoples, Asian communities, MELAA (Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African), disabled and neuro-divergent individuals, and regional based individuals (defined for the purposes of the New Zealand screen sector as those outside of Auckland and Wellington)
NZCS is working for the advancement of the story telling perspective with our community and getting a better balance of representation of camera crew and cinematographers is one of our priorities.
Call for applications for upcoming positions is distributed through the NZCS mailing list and other allied guilds and crew booking services. After applications are received, the NZCS Professional Development Committee will review and provide a short list of eligible candidates to the DP's, producers and camera team to select and interview.
To be eligible candidates must be a NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident.
We are also keen to develop a database of under-represented minorites in the film industry in New Zealand. You can express interest here by emailing a current copy of your CV and showreel links (if you have one) for us to hold on file.
If you have any questions or just want to chat about it further, please feel free to get in touch.
